How long will it take full-time students to complete their M.A. degree?
Full-time students will be able to complete the degree in a single calendar year, with three or four courses in both Fall and Spring semesters, and a supervised Practicum and Master’s essay in the following summer. Part-time students who take only the minimum of two courses per year may take as long as four academic years (with a summer Practicum and Master’s essay). Likewise, students in NYU professional schools may, with permission of their deans, take an additional course each semester and in summers, and thereby complete the M.A. along with their professional degrees. To accommodate students who are otherwise fully employed, the core courses are given in the early evening.  Most electives, however, are earlier in the day.

What is the procedure if I am currently enrolled in the Bioethics Program and need to take a semester or more off?
The NYU Graduate School of Arts and Sciences requires that *all * students maintain continuous enrollment in each semester until the degree is granted. Students who wish to take time off from the Bioethics MA Program *must maintain continuous enrollment.* Failure to adhere to the rules and regulations of GSAS will result in outstanding fees, possible application for re-admission into the program, and, in some cases, may affect the F-1 or J-1 visas of foreign students. All students who wish to take time off from the program must immediately contact the Bioethics Program to file the necessary forms.

For GSAS students there are three ways to maintain continuous enrollment:

*Register for at least one credit during the Fall and Spring semesters until the degree is conferred.
   * Take an approved official leave of absence.
   * Enroll for Maintenance of Matriculation. To do so, student must enroll in G47.4747 for one credit.

For more information on the rules and procedures regarding the request  for a  leave of absence or continuous enrollment, please visit

If I take courses at another institution, how many credits may I transfer to NYU?
Masters students are limited to a total of 8 transfer credits. See http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.pp.manual for more detail.
