Are there any special features of the application process to the Bioethics Program?

In addition to the GSAS requirement of a personal statement, please submit a short essay on a topic of moral concern in current medical and/or environmental discussions.

What prior studies does this program require?

Applicants should have a Bachelor or Arts of Bachelor of Science degree, preferably with undergraduate courses in one or more of the following areas: Medical, Professional, or Environmental Ethics; Political or Legal Philosophy; Medical Anthropology, History or Sociology; Health Care Administration, Law, or Policy; Ecology and Environmental Policy.  A certificate course in Medical Ethics at NYU or elsewhere is also suitable qualification for admission.

How long will it take full-time students to complete their M.A. degree?

Full-time students will be able to complete the degree in a single calendar year, with three or four courses in both Fall and Spring semesters, and a supervised Practicum and Master’s essay in the following summer.

Part-time students who take only the minimum of two courses per year may take as long as four academic years (with a summer Practicum and Master’s essay). Likewise, students in NYU professional schools may, with permission of their deans, take an additional course each semester and in summers, and thereby complete the M.A. along with their professional degrees.

To accommodate students who are otherwise fully employed, the core courses are given in the early evening.  Most electives, however, are earlier in the day.

Is there financial aid?

The Graduate School of Arts and Science gives no financial aid to Master’s candidates.  However, some employers may support part-time study.
